Frequently Asked Questions for Students

Student Conduct is responsible for the administration of the Code of Student Conduct and providing a fair and educational student conduct process for students and student organizations. Student Conduct educates the Auburn University community about student’s rights, responsibilities, and expectations. Dean’s Certification requests are also processed and completed by Student Conduct.

Student Conduct is located on the first floor of the Student Center in Suite 1206. Office hours are Monday-Friday, 7:45 a.m. – 4:45 p.m.

A copy can be found here: Code of Student Conduct. You may also pick up a hard copy of the Code on the first floor of the Student Center in Suite 1206.

Any Auburn University faculty member, staff member, and/or a student may make a complaint/charge against an enrolled Auburn University student for a violation(s) of the Code.

If after viewing the Code of Student Conduct, an Auburn University student, faculty, or staff member believes a violation of the code has occurred he/she must submit a complaint to Student Conduct. The complaint must be submitted to conduct@auburn.edu, online at aub.ie/studentconductreport, or delivered in person to Student Conduct in Suite 1206 of the AU Student Center as soon as possible after the event takes place, but no later than 30 working days after detection of the alleged violation. In the event the complaint is made more than 30 working days after the detection of the alleged violation, the Senior Vice President or his/her designee, upon a showing of good cause by the charging party, may allow the charge to proceed in his or her discretion.

Student Conduct issues a charge notice via email to the student’s Auburn University email account, if a complaint that has been received has merit. As stated in the charge notice, the student should attend the meeting with their conduct officer in the Office of Student Conduct at the assigned date and time. If you need to re-schedule an appointment with a Student Conduct officer, call 334-844-1305 between 7:45 a.m. – 4:45 p.m. (Monday-Friday). As detailed in the charge notice, you should also read the Code of Student Conduct.

The conduct officer will review the Code, the conduct process, and the alleged violation. The student will be given the opportunity to share information regarding the alleged violation of the Code. The charged student may be given the option to resolve the case through mutual consent of the parties involved. If the case cannot be resolved through mutual consent, the case will be referred to the Student Conduct Committee. At this time a student will have the opportunity to request a hearing through the Student Conduct Committee.

Yes, a student may utilize one advisor of his/her choosing. An advisor may only counsel the charged/charging party student in the preparation and presentation of their case. The advisor may be present at the hearing, but cannot speak on behalf of the student. Student Conduct must have your written permission to discuss your case with any advisor, attorney, and/or parent/guardian. The waiver/release form can be located on the first floor of the Student Center in Suite 1206 or online at Student Waiver and Information Release Form.

An attorney is not required; however students are permitted to use an advisor of his/her choosing, which may include an attorney.

Due to the federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) laws, Auburn University is prohibited from disclosing information about a students disciplinary record to any third party, including parents, without the student’s consent. A student may choose to sign a waiver/release, giving permission for Student Conduct staff to discuss his/her case with a parent/ legal guardian. The waiver/release form can be located on the first floor of the Melton Student Center in Suite 1206 or online at Student Waiver and Information Release Form. The lone exception to this rule would be a Parental Notification.

Parents/legal guardians will only be notified via letter if a student less than 21 years of age violates University policy related to drugs and/or alcohol. The letter will contain information regarding the violation of the code that occurred. Additional information will not be shared unless the student completes a wavier/release form. The waiver/release form can be located on the first floor of the Melton Student Center in Suite 1206 or online at Student Waiver and Information Release Form. If after speaking with your parent/legal guardian, they have questions concerning the incident, they can contact  Student Conduct at (334) 844-1305 or via email at conduct@auburn.edu.

Yes. The Code of Student Conduct does apply to off campus behaviors in certain circumstances. As an Auburn University student, your behavior, even off campus, might have a negative impact on the health, safety, or welfare of the campus community. Yes. The student conduct process is educational in nature and operates separately from any court system. The purpose of the student conduct process is to determine if a Code violation occurred. The role of the student conduct process is not to determine if criminal and/or civil law was violated.

As detailed in the Code, determinations made or sanctions imposed under the Code shall not be subject to change because criminal charges arising out of the same facts giving rise to violation of University rules were dismissed, reduced, or resolved in favor or against the criminal law defendant (student).

Outcomes are intended to be educational in nature and are determined based on the nature of the violation and a student’s previous conduct record. As detailed in the Code, sanctions can range from a reprimand to expulsion from the university. Please consult the Code for a detailed list of potential sanctions.

There are a variety of reasons that  Student Conduct may place a conduct hold on a student’s record. Please contact Student Conduct at 334-844-1305 to determine why there is a hold on your record. The following is a general list of why a conduct hold may be on a student’s record:

  • The student has not contacted Student Conduct to resolve an alleged violation of the Code.
  • The student has not completed assigned outcomes by the due date for that case.
  • The student has missed an appointment(s) with Student Conduct.

These requests are usually required by law schools, medical schools, undergraduate schools for transferring students, travel abroad programs, state bar associations, government agencies or independent agencies when you are applying for admissions or employment.

Information regarding the process can be found here, Conduct Record Verification Process.

A written report regarding conduct violations will be filed in Student Conduct for seven years after which they are destroyed. This information is considered confidential. Access to these records will be limited as indicated by applicable law and university policy as outlined in the Student Policy handbook.
